Let's go back to the Basic Bar and celebrate our new PRESIDENT. This no-frills corner hangout was handmade by its owner Jon Mangini. Originally from the East Coast and formerly in construction, Mangini worked with architect Graham Downes to create his vision of a bar that is industrial and edgy, yet still warm and inviting. Even with a few hard edges. The one-page menu offers only one thing: pizza. Thin-crusted East Coast-style pies come in two varieties and toppings are sold separately. There’s the “Red Pie” (marinara) with and without mozzarella and the “White Pie” (Parmesan and garlic) with and without mozzarella. Additional toppings include mushrooms, roasted red peppers, eggplant and artichoke hearts, allowing you to pick and choose. Basic offers a full bar and a large variety of bottled and draft beer to wash down your pie. Go early on game days and keep your eyes peeled when trying to locate it — the converted warehouse has only an inconspicuous metal sign distinguishing it from other warehouses in the area. Let's celebrate our new president See ya at the meetup, Dree'

Conscious Comedy Explosion! featuring "Clean Mic" Documentary
Private Screening in San Diego,CA
October 2008 will mark the San Diego launch of the much anticipated documentary Clean Mic: Laughing Until It Hurts. Clean Mic is an entertaining, thought provoking journey into the realities and adversaries facing Washington DC, New York, and Boston comedians. This funny, behind the scenes portrait reveals the complexities of performing clean comedy for an audience and society which often rewards minority stereotypes. Social comedy veterans icons Paul Mooney and Dick Gregory reflect on their personal stories and experiences, observations of Hollywood marketing of African-American comedians and discuss legends such as Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor and the newest star comedian Dave Chappelle.
Clean Mic just completed its first festival screenings at the Boston Roxbury Film Festival and the Martha's Vineyard African-American Film Festival. It was a finalist for best documentary. This is Washington filmmaker Will Gorham's first documentary. He has written and produced projects for independent television and theater in the DC area for over seven years, to include the critically acclaimed play LeDroit’s Home Team.
What: An opportunity to attend the private screening of Clean Mic: Laughing Until It Hurts Movie Premiere following with a question and answer session with the director regarding the “State of Ethnic Comedy”. Joining us and emceeing for the afternoon will be the Mooney Twins, sons of Paul Mooney, with and our special guest, D'Miliant, comedian and author of 'Black Comedians on Black Comedy'.
Where: Malcolm X Library, 5148 Market St., San Diego, CA 92114 When: Saturday, October 11, 2008 from 4:30pm-7:30pm

Where did the summer go!!! I hope you enjoyed it as much as DQ and I enjoyed all of you! We will be enjoying the gorgeous view of the Del Mar Plaza at a local staple called Epazote Oceanview Steakhouse. We have been here before, but they have recently renovated this already beautiful place. I love what they did I hope you enjoy the changes also. A complete menu tranformation (not to fear — their signature margaritas remain), The most recent renovations took place inside, where the new Z Ocean Bar features ceiling-high sliding glass windows, and tiered high-top and banquette seating that offer optimal ocean views. It is a pretty good place to go for appetizers (typical fusion restaurant classics) or happy hour. I like the set up of the indoor and outdoor seating. It has a great view and room to stand around the bar and drink. Epazotes provides a DJ on Friday nights. Come out and enjoy it for yourselves!!http://w ww.epazotedelmar.com / See ya the meetup, Dree'

San Diego is a vacation paradise!! A lot of people come here to have an experience that awakens the senses, relaxes the body and soothes the soul. We are fortunate enough to live in this extraordinary place. Let's enjoy it by meeting up at The Catamaran Hotel on Saturday, August 23rd from 12-6pm. They have several water-related sports and activities we can indulge in: Fun cats, pedal boats, surfing, boogie boarding, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, powerboats, and ski boats. They also have non-water activities available like biking and skating. It will be fun for the whole family. Please check out the website for rental prices if you are interested at http://www.resortwat ersports.com/. Everyone is responsible for renting their own equipment or can simply relax on the beach and enjoy the surroundings. A San Diego Black Professionals day on the beach would not be complete unless we can break bread together. We will have a canopy setup south of the Catamaran Hotel. This time I would like to take our event up a notch by having a planned menu. In order to accomplish this I need everyone to contribute $10. This way, on the day of the event all you will need to bring are your beach accessories. Beach attire is suggested!! THE MENU WILL INCLUDE: Cedar Plank Salmon Jerk Seasoned Tilapia Grilled Pork Lion Macaroni salad Asian cabbage salad Black eyed pea casserole Spinach salad Desserts Soft drinks Lemonade Please contact me ASAP with your donation of $10 per person for food and beverages. I am looking forward to meeting and mingling with all of you there! See you soon. -Dree SDBP meetup organizer

Summer 2008 is well underway now!!! August we will be enjoying a spectacular waterfront setting on Roy's Outside Patio Bar. http://www.roysresta urant.com/cuisine.as p The first Roy’s restaurant opened 20 years ago in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1988 Chef Roy Yamaguchi was the first chef to ever blend European cooking techniques with the flavors of fresh local ingredients found in Asia and the Pacific Rim. Roy Yamaguchi was and is the innovator of Hawaiian Fusion Cuisine. Today, we celebrate the operation of over 37 locations around the world including 28 in the continental US, 7 in Hawaii, and one in Japan and Guam. After cocktails, conversation and a sensational view, everyone that is interested can join us at Altitudes in the Marriott Gas Lamp for dancing with an East Coast DJ D-SKWIZ until 2am. http://www.altitudes kybar.com/enter Nothing beats hanging with the San Diego Black Professionals meetup group!!!
